Mountain Ash Berries As Medicine

A Mountain Ash Tree Loaded with Luscious Berries – Beautiful Red Color

I snapped this picture the other day with my phone. I thought it was a nice one. This is the City of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, in the background.

These berries look so beautiful. I did a little Googling about the mountain ash tree. I never realized the amazing health benefits of the berries. Here is a link to more info: https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-571/mountain-ash but in a nutshell:

Mountain Ash is a plant. People use the berries to make medicine. The berries may be used fresh, dried, or cooked and then dried. People take mountain ash for treating kidney disease, diabetes, arthritis, low levels of vitamin C (vitamin C deficiency), diarrhea, and menstrual problems.

I for one am going to get me some of these berries. The birds know how good these are.

I hope you enJOYed my picture today and also learning, if you did not know, how amazing mountain ash berries are!

Mind Power, Visualization

Personal Empowerment Hack!

I found this quote this morning and I never want to forget it and nor will you!

I apologize that I don’t know who it is by. I sometimes bounce around and read multiple books at once. When I figure out whose it is I will update this blog post but for now we have no time to waste, we need to know this info so here it is:

“A faulty self image leads to failure. But a favorable self image brings you fortune and all success even if you are in an unfavorable situation right now.”

I don’t know about you but this was absolutely freeing and empowering to me. It made me realize that if I am in a fearful place or insecure place it does not matter, I merely need to change the way I see myself and I can change the situation! Wow. It goes right along with another blog post I did today over at by main blog. Be sure to check out this powerful and enlightening post too! Here is the link: https://maggieholbik.blog/2019/10/28/using-your-minds-eye/ It’s all about using your mind’s eye just like when we take a picture of something. 🙂

I hope you too found this info useful today.

Celery Juice For Oral Health

Celery Juice is amazing! I am sure most of us have heard of some the benefits of celery juice.

Today I thought I would share some celery juice tips for oral health. These are straight from Anthony Williams new book “Celery Juice”.

Sore Throat: keep a sip of celery juice in your mouth for 30 seconds, letting it sit toward the back of the throat so it can kill the bacteria or virus creating the soreness. Try gargling, too, it you like.

Swollen Glands in Throat or Neck: you can keep the celery juice in the back of your mouth, toward the throat, for a full minute before swallowing to help drive it into your lymphatic system over time.

Tonsil Stones: Do a gentle gargle with celery juice before swallowing.

Canker Sore or Mouth Ulcer: try first drying off the sore or ulcer with a paper towel or tissue and then taking a sip of your celery juice that you hold in your mouth, making sure that it covers the sensitive spot, for 30 seconds or longer before swallowing.

Toothache/Tooth Abscess/Mouth Injury: let a sip of celery juice sit in your mouth for 30 to 60 seconds to help the sodium cluster salts enter the trouble spot and do their healing.

Tooth Pulled: you can leave a a sip of celery juice in your mouth for 15 to 30 seconds – don’t swish, though – and then swallow.

Cavity: Slowly sip the whole glass of celery juice, giving each one a gentle swish around the mouth. This is an exception to the guidance above about how many times to use these therapies per glass. In this case, do swish with every sip.

Receding Gums/Gum Disease: You can gently swish a sip of celery juice around in your mouth for one minute and then swallow.

Cold Sore/Fever Blister/Bacterial Infection: for any of these on the lip, you can let the celery juice touch it, using your finger to dab if needed and then keep a sip in your mouth for 30 to 60 seconds before swallowing.

Cracks in The Corners of Your Mouth: If you have cracks in the corners of your mouth, sip your celery juice slowly and let if find its way into those painful crevices – this can help them heal much more quickly. If you have chapped or cracked lips, you can also sip your celery juice in such a way that you let some coat your lips. In either case, you can also use your finger to dab your lips or corners of your mouth with the celery juice if that is easier.

I thought these were awesome suggestions. If you would like to learn more about celery juice and its benefits, you may find this link helpful: https://maggiesvitamins.wordpress.com/2018/07/30/celery-juice-is-the-bomb/

Dreams, Happiness, Manifesting, visualizing, Your Amazing Life

Using Dreams as a Tool for Manifesting Your Life’s Dreams!

Early this morning I had a bad dream… one of those really bad dreams. I won’t go into details but it was ‘so real’. In my dream my husband had died in a fire in a big building and I thought my daughter had too but she came out. Anyhow while telling my daughter and hubby about the dream, I wept and wept because it was ‘so real’.

My daughter then shared with me about a dream that she had that she will never forget and that had scared her because it was ‘so real’. She started to weep too!

I shared with her an exercise that I use with my coaching clients about using that same emotional power from a dream that seems ‘so real’ for manifesting what we want in life.

For manifesting, we(man) are the main component in creating the manifestation or what we want to create. We need to first visualize/see what we want to happen, or to achieve, or to acquire in our life and then we need to FEEL as though we are already there experiencing that which we wish to create.

It’s just like the dream! The dream ‘feels real’ because you are FEELING the feelings of this event actually occurring. This is a huge big deal. Really think on this. A dream IS real as it is a manifestation of a concept. The key to future manifesting is to first dream up the concept, SEE it, and put the feeling behind it as though it were already real and than detach from the HOW’s of how it will happen and then let the invisible forces go to work to create your manifestation.

This stuff really works. I have seen it happen over and over again in my life and it always seems like a delightful surprise but I know that I created it! And I am getting really really good at this. This works like magic folks. 🙂

I believe in this so much, today I am sharing this same blog post on all of my blogs! 🙂

Have a great day everyone!

Bananas, Food Hacks, Fruit, Kitchen Hacks

Best Kept Banana Secret!

Banana Hack! Banana Hack!

Here is a banana hack you will want to know if you don’t already. So many people spend copious amounts of time prepping and freezing their bananas. Some people peel and chop them and put them into plastic ziploc type bags, others mash them and freeze them and I am sure there are numerous others ways.

But the easiest of easiest ways is fast, convenient and enviro friendly.

Just throw your ripe bananas (or not ripe) in your freezer. That’s it. When you are ready to use them, take them out of the freezer and allow to thaw for a bit and you are good to go. I usually pop mine in the microwave for about 30 seconds and then peel them and they are perfect.

They do not lose their color or flavor this way at all and the air does not get to them. I love bananas for having their own jacket or container… fast food to go … or pop in the freezer as they are.

I use frozen bananas in countless ways… in muffin recipes… banana bread… smoothies…. chopped fruit concoctions that I make on the stove so that they are warm and gooey… example: The banana you see in this picture was used today in a pan on the stove with blueberries and chopped cantaloupe cooked slowly till it was warm and delicious. Total nutrition there. My husband just popped home mid afternoon and had some for a snack and my daughter finished off what was left after school….. kid friendly to boot!

The perfect frozen banana to use in whatever recipe

With most of us trying to eat healthier any hack helps. I hope you enJOYed this one today. 🙂

Cravings, Fruit, Sugar, Sugar Addiction

Sugar Addiction & Cravings

Woman looking at chocolate cake with adoration in her eyes. 🙂

I found myself commenting on a FB post this morning about someone who is struggling with sugar addiction. After commenting with my input, I thought.. hey why don’t I write a blog post about this. 🙂

After 30 years of studying nutrition both on my own, and through my certification as a Board Certified Nutritionist, I have come to some clear conclusions about sugar, sugar addictions, and cravings. I will keep it short and ‘sweet’ 🙂 hee hee

We need sweetness in our lives and we need sugar. However, it is the natural sugars that we need. Sugar is needed to uptake nutrients into the body, especially micro-nutrients which are vitamins and minerals in trace amounts. Honey is appealing to animals and to us for a reason… because we need it. I could write a whole chapter on the healing benefits of this ancient gift from the Gods, but you can do your own research when you have time… so back to sugar…

Your brain and liver demands natural sugars to function. When you do not get them, you will crave sugar, carbs and more!

Best Way to Solve This?

Eat as much natural sugar as you can get into you in the form of fruits of all varieties, honey, and maple syrup. These are all forms of natural sugars and they ALL have healing properties beyond the sugar. They are super foods really.

Fruit is especially amazing as it is easily assimilated, is loaded with nutrition and has the natural sugars so you can uptake the nutrients. And let’s not forget about the high fiber content too especially in fruits like apples.

I try to eat fruit everyday and sometimes I find I miss a day of eating fruit. I have not met a person yet who is able to get too much fruit into them in a day. For one thing, in my opinion there is no such thing as too much fruit, and secondly good luck trying to. Most people have a token apple or banana throughout the day or one smoothie with a few berries and a banana…. we need MUCH more than this.

Of course check with your medical professional and follow their advice for any particular diet you may have been prescribed for a particular medical condition, but for me, if I was ill and had to pick one food group to eat for easy assimilation, easy nutrient uptake, sweetness and appealing to the palette, nutrient dense, and miraculous, I would pick fruit!

And one final thought. Addictions of any kind can be helped by more fruit intake and thus nutrient uptake. Addictions deplete the body of nutrients and natural sugars. The body and brain both desperately need the natural sugars and nutrients to function and to create homeostasis or to put it simply ‘balance’.

I hope you enJOYed my thoughts for the day on sugar. Life is meant to be enJOYed and to be sweet. 🙂

Gorgeous, Amazing Fruit so colorful, delicious & nutritious!!!
instant pot, Maggie's Soups, Soups

My Soups

A lot of people ask me about my soup recipes. Most of the time or actually almost ALL of the time there is no recipe. It’s soup. I throw in whatever I have.

Yesterday I made this amazing beef vegetable barley soup with a leftover prime rib roast I had in the fridge. I didn’t take any pictures along the way, but thought I would still share some of the things I did in case someone finds it useful.

In this case I used my Instant Pot. I sauteed some onions, garlic and celery first, right in the pot. When that was done, I added some chopped carrots, my left over prime rib roast which had a bone attached, some organic beef bouillon and a frozen leftover bag of whatever from the freezer. The whatever was the juices and veggies left from a prior roast I make in a slow cooker. I do not waste anything. I had bagged up that goodness and put in a plastic ziploc bag (you could use a glass jar to freeze as well) and I froze it for an occasion like this. It was perfect. I threw the whole thing into the Instant Pot frozen … after taking it out of the bag of course hee hee.

Saving and freezing leftover veggies, rice, meats and odds and ends are perfect for soup! Never waste anything even if it is a tiny amount! Even mashed potatoes…they are perfect for thickening a soup like pea soup.

I also added a small tetra container of store bought soup that was a beef barley soup. I made sure it was a brand that was high quality and low sodium (sometimes you have to cheat for the sake of time and ease). I then added salt and pepper, of course.

I put the Instant Pot on to the Stew setting and let it cook. When it was done I took out the beef pieces and shredded them… so tender! I added it back in to the soup and then served my delicious and amazing soup. Hubby loved it!

Then I stored the leftovers in these jars. You can see how the grease rises to the top once the soup has been stored in the fridge. This is perfect. You can then skim it off and toss it. The fat is great because while cooking the soup it ‘carries the flavor‘. Fat is a carrier so it helps to meld and mold the soup’s flavor but once cooled, it’s collected and contained and can be tossed.

Now here I am the next day after making the Beef Soup, with my turkey carcass from Thanksgiving this past weekend here in Canada, in the Instant Pot with onions, celery, carrots and spices to cook down to my turkey soup broth. Note: if you don’t have an Instant Pot no worries use a regular pot and get it boiling with all of your ingredients in there and then let it simmer for a couple of hours. Strain the stock and keep any bits of goodness for your soup like the onions, turkey pieces etc.

Now you can use this to make a batch of soup with fresh veggies, the rest or your leftovers, maybe a little bag of rice from your freezer and anything else that you want to throw in. It’s SOUP!

People seem to be more open minded to adding in various ingredients when it comes to making a salad. Soup is no different. Have fun with cooking. Get creative. Be resourceful. It’s fun! I hope you found this helpful.

Food As Medicine, Spices

Winter Spices

gorgeous setting with cooking spices and herbs (bay leaves, chili powder, coriander, cloves, cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks, garam masala, piri piri, salt, turmeric) on a wooden mat

Winter is a perfect time to enJOY some great spices. A few that come to mind are cinnamon, cardamon, cayenne, tumeric, ginger and ginseng.

All of these spices can be incorporated into things like hots drinks and into your cooking. These spices all add flavor to your dishes but also promote thermogenesis (the rate which food is broken down) and promotes weight loss!

When we eat real foods, herbs, and spices they truly are medicine and they all have their own unique healing properties. How delightful is this? As the saying goes, just eat ‘real’ food.

Be open to trying new herbs and spices as well as new foods and food groups. See it as a craft and enJOY playing with diversity.
