Hair Mineral Analysis & Your Health

Minerals in the body are involved in almost all enzyme reactions, metabolic activity, and detoxification cycles. They are vital for the effective absorption and proper functioning of nutrients and vitamins.

Our bodies cannot utilize vitamins, and other nutrients, without a correct balance of minerals, even in trace amounts. Proper mineral balance is essential to avoid chronic fatigue, weight gain/loss, headaches, depression, and osteoporosis.

Mineral imbalances are also linked to oxidative stress that can lead to some cancers!!!

Today’s North American diet has become devoid of adequate quantities of essential minerals. When mineral deficiencies occur, toxic metals often replace these vital minerals in the body. Because of today’s highly industrialized society, we are exposed to toxic metals every day.

The presence of toxic metals in the body has been implicated in the onset of chronic ailments such as Alzheimer’s disease, ADD/ADHD, diabetes, autism and Parkinson’s disease as well as infertility and miscarriage. The addition of essential minerals can expel toxic metals.

Various mineral imbalances, as revelead by hair analysis, frequently lead to metabolic dysfunctions before any physical symptoms manifest.

An affordable, non-invasive Hair Mineral Analysis can help establish a nutritional profile to be used by you and your health practitioner to guide in the development of effective wellness and nutritional balancing regimen.

Hair Mineral Analysis

Hair Mineral Analysis is a screening test to measure the levels of up to 60 essential minerals and toxic metals. With correct testing and interpretation, one can construct a complete metabolic profile of the human body.

Hair is an excellent biopsy material. It is easy to sample, easily preserved and transported, represents a soft tissue of the body and is a storage and eliminative tissue. As hair grows it forms a permanent record of the body’s nutritional deficiencies or excesses.

Minerals screened include calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, phosporus, copper, zinc, manganese, selenium, iron and cobalt.

Elevated readings can have different meanings depending upon:

  1. Present Symptoms
  2. The Elevated Mineral in Question
  3. Whether a specific treatment, regimen or diet is being followed
  4. Relationship to other elemental readings

Toxic metals screening includes lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, and aluminum.

A very high reading may represent a toxic amount of the mineral in the hair, and in the body tissues in general. In the case of a toxic metal, any deposition or accumulation in the hair indicates some degree of toxicity.

High levels of toxic metals inhibit the body’s ability to process and assimilte specific nutritional elements that are essential to good health and have a proven link to many types of diseases.

The information along with dietary and nutritional evaluations will provide the data needed for a nutritional balancing program to establish and maintain optimal levels of wellness. By correcting tissue mineral levels and ratios with proper diet, supplementary nutrients, and lifestyle modifications, many physical and behavioral health conditions can be prevented or reversed.

Health Problems that may be associated with mineral imbalances or toxic metal excesses:

  • ADD/ADHD
  • Autism
  • Allergies
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Anxiety & Depression
  • Arthritis
  • Arteriosclerosis
  • Blood Sugar Imbalances
  • Digestive Disorders
  • Headaches including migraines
  • Hair Loss
  • Heart Failure
  • Hyperactivity
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Inability to lose weight
  • Infertility and Miscarriage
  • Insomnia
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Lethargy or weakness
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Osteoporosis (brittle bones)
  • Parkinson’s disease

A hair mineral analysis professional lab test provides results in the measurement of 15 toxic elements and 25 nutritional elements and is documented in an easy to read report, tabulated against similar control groups based on age/gender similarities.

These reports are one of my best go-to tools to use to better serve my clients in regards to fast tracking and finding the clues to better health. I highly recommend these reports that come from an accredited lab using state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and today’s most modern testing practices for precision results. Nutrient Deficiencies, vitamin b12, vitamins, Women's Health

Vitamin B12 Benefits for Women

Energy:

Women often juggle a lot in life. There are so many things competing for our time in an average day, it’s no wonder, women often experience low vitality and a lack of energy. However, this can also come from a deficiency in Vitamin B12. If you’re feeling sluggish and you’re not sure why, a lack of vitamin B12 (cobalamin) may be to blame.

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that aids in red blood cell formation, which prevents against a type of anemia that can often make people feel weak and tired.

Heart Health

Heart disease and stroke kill 31,000 women in Canada annually. When it comes to heart health, Vitamin B12 along with B6, and folic acid work together help to reduce homocysteine, which is a protein that can build up in blood and damage arterial walls. Therefore, B12 plays an important role in heart health.

Your Smile

A lack of B12 can affect your oral health. If you are experiencing tongue inflammation also knows as ‘glossitis’, you may have a deficiency in Vitamin B12. You may notice that your tongue may be red and swollen or it might look smooth. The inflammation can cause the tiny bumps along your tongue that contain your taste buds to stretch out and disappear.

Pins & Needles

If you experience “pins and needles” sensations in your extremities and/or numbness or tingling in the hands, legs, or feet, you may be deficient in B12. Vitamin B12 helps produce the fatty sheath (myelin) that surrounds and protects your nerves. When you are deficient in B12, your nerve cells can’t function properly and you will surely notice. This is often seen in elderly people who are low in B12.

Mobility Issues

A deficiency in B12 can affect a person’s balance by producing an unsteady gait and balance (ataxia). You may experience difficulty walking, staggering and/or balance problems.

Thinning or Abnormal Hair

To keep it simple, B12 promotes healthy hair growth by assisting in the production of oxygen-rich red blood cells, which feed hair follicles. If you notice a change in the constituency of your hair, you may want to search for other clues that tie in as well and lead you to B12 deficiency as a possible underlying it all.

A Healthy Glow

People with a B12 deficiency often look pale or have a slight yellow tinge to their skin (jaundice).

Jaundice develops when a person’s body is not able to produce enough red blood cells. Red blood cells circulating under the skin provide it with its normal color. Without enough of these cells, the skin may look pale.

Vitamin B12 plays a role in the production of red blood cells. A vitamin B12 deficiency can cause a lack of red blood cells, or megaloblastic anemia, which has an association with jaundice.

This type of anemia can also weaken the red blood cells, which the body then breaks down more quickly. When the liver breaks down red blood cells, it releases bilirubin. Bilirubin is a brownish substance that gives the skin the yellowish tone that is characteristic of jaundice, and thus explains the lack of a healthy glow.

These are only a few of the conditions caused by a deficiency of Vitamin B12. I will be writing more blog posts on this in the future, but I highly recommend getting your B12 serum levels checked the next time you are getting routine blood work. I personally obtain a copy of my blood work to keep in my own file so I can follow along and monitor my levels of this vitamin as well as others vitamins and other results from my lab work. I believe we should all be a proactive component of our own health care.

Reflexology, self-care, self-love, Your Amazing Life

What is Reflexology

One of my favorite self-care modalities is going for regular Reflexology sessions. Not only do I find it so beneficial for my health and wellness, but it’s so relaxing! And I am one of those people who love having my feet touched, rubbed, and given attention :-), so this works for me.

In reflexology, pressure is placed on areas of the hands and feet in order to improve healing and reduce pain.  The idea is that there are points in the hands and feet that correlate and are connected to other areas throughout the body.  These points are called reflex areas.

You may have seen a reflexology chart before that shows these areas of connection.  For example, the ball of the foot is connected to the heart and chest while the lower back and intestines are connected to the heel of the foot. Reflexology dates back to at least ancient Egypt.  Illustrations on tomb walls show physicians using the foot to heal the entire body.  Over time, this practice has evolved, and today modern research backs up the premise that these points exist.  (http://reflexology-usa.net/history.htm)

Reflexology and massage often go hand in hand, but they aren’t the same thing.  Massage can take place all over the body and focuses on the soft tissue in the body such as muscles and fascia.  Reflexology is a specialized practice that focuses on the reflex points in the hands, feet, and ears, whereas massage often takes place over the entire body.

Acupressure is another similar healing art, but it is also different from reflexology.  Acupressure addresses energy lines called meridians.  With this practice there are 14 long lines of energy that run the length of the body and there are hundreds of pressure points along these lines.

Some of these pressure points are found along the feet, hands, and ears.  However, there are relatively few compared to pressure points found throughout the entire body.  Again, reflexology focuses only on the feet, hands, and ears.

Reflexology may be combined with massage or acupressure, but it can stand alone as well.  Some reflexologists choose to get certified in multiple therapies while others work only in reflexology.

Reflexology has been known to have health benefits for thousands of years.  It can help to improve physical and mental health by reducing the effects of stress and anxiety.  It can provide relief from headaches and other forms of pain.  It can improve blood pressure, circulation, and can be used to combat the symptoms from cancer and cancer treatment.

This healing art can improve your sleep, increase your energy, and assist with improving your mood.  If you suffer from mental health issues, arthritis, diabetes or a neurological condition you’ll find that reflexology is complementary therapy.

As far as side effects go, reflexology has relatively few.  Some people report having sensitivity in their feet after a session.  You might also experience fatigue, a runny nose, or coughing afterward.  This is because the practice of reflexology can release toxins and your body will work to rid itself of those.  Side effects usually last less than a day and are rarely serious.

I highly recommend this wonderful modality as part of your regular self-care. Taking care of yourself is a very high form of self-love and is so, so important. Reflexology is an excellent way to practice self-love, healing, and improving your overall well being.

Even Health Is a Journey

Great works are performed not by strength, but perseverance.”

Samuel johnson

Advances in our health and well-being do come from strength, but perseverance is the most important component. Doing little bits consistently will have great benefits.

Never underestimate the small steps you take toward optimal or better health. The one glass of water does count. The walk after dinner does count. Maybe you didn’t go to the gym 3 times this week, but you went once. It counts!

Hang in there, keep adding in more good things, and it will pay off. It’s so worth it. 🙂

Bromelain, Digestive Health, hair mineral analysis, Happy Liver, heavy metals, liver, liver health, medical medium

Amazing Help For Your Liver!

The primary functions of the liver are: Bile production and excretion. Excretion of bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones, drugs and metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. The liver is also the master filter used to disarm and detain harmful materials, screen and filter the blood, store glycogen for use as glucose in the body, and much much more!

However, today I want to touch on the role the liver plays in protein and fat synthesis. People tend to eat a lot of protein and most of that protein is also high in fat! Even nuts and seeds have fat content along with the protein. Although these protein sources might be healthier to some degree than animal protein for example, they, along with animal protein are high in fats.

When you combine large amounts of fats and proteins, in conjunction with the myriad of other issues our livers deal with everyday like pathogens, viruses, pesticides, herbicides, perfumes, scented candles, toxic cleaning products, stress, and the biggie heavy metals, our livers are overburdened and cannot keep up. This is why it is estimated that about 90% of the population in North America has a fatty liver or at least a sluggish liver.

This brings me to the point of my blog post today. I have found something that I love for helping with protein synthesis to help support the liver and overall health and well being. I am sure we have all heard of the enzyme bromelain? If you have not heard of that term, I am sure you know what a pineapple is? 🙂

Here is the best part about bromelain when it comes to the liver:
Bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme derived from the pineapple plant that has a centuries-long history of being used to treat medical ailments, primarily throughout Central and South America. It is currently categorized as a dietary supplement, and generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA

Enzymes like bromelain are so important and also help the body function properly, trigger the production of hormones and muscles and support a healthy metabolism (think weight management here).

When the liver is able to assimilate and break down the macro nutrients like proteins, carbs and fats, it functions better and burns fuel better. What this means is that we become healthier in every cell of our body, we can uptake the micro-nutrients likes vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, and we burn fuel properly!

I truly believe that one of the keys to health, and perhaps the biggest key, is to support our liver and to help it function optimally. Anthony Williams, The Medical Medium has dedicated an entire book to liver health and it’s called “Liver Rescue”.

Here is a paragraph from one of Anthony’s blog posts on liver health:

“Your liver is an amazing, powerful and hardworking organ. When it’s not doing well—when you have sluggish liver or fatty liver or its bogged down by toxins or too much protein or fat in the diet—that’s a big part of the root of just about every condition and symptom under the sun, including: acne, adrenal problems, autoimmune disorders, brain fog, chemical food sensitivities, diabetes, constipation, dark circles under the eyes, emotional issues, fatigue, gallstones, gout, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, hormone problems, IBS, inflammation, body pain, jaundice, aging, liver cancer, eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo, insomnia, cysts, methylation problems, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), SIBO, sinus infections, urinary tract infections, varicose veins and weight gain.”

*****************

There are many things one can do to support the liver and bromelain is one of my favorite go-to’s because of it being a Proteolytic enzyme, also called protease, proteinase, or peptidase, any of a group of enzymes that break the long chainlike molecules of proteins into shorter fragments (peptides) and eventually into their components, amino acids.

MORE BENEFITS:

Other added benefits of the Bromelain Plus product I am referring to and use with my clients is:

  • Supports the body’s normal healing process
  • Promotes optimal cell health
  • Supports the body’s normal inflammatory response
  • Supports the body’s normal tissue and recovery repair process
  • Supports a healthy immune system
  • Supports healthy joint function
  • Promotes healthy blood circulation
  • May help support normal blood viscosity and blood platelet aggregation

Another reason I love this product is the delivery system. You actually get to drink this product! Yum. Yum! In fact I am drinking my morning dose right now. I usually shoot for twice a day with this supplement.

Isotonix – the World’s Most Advanced Nutraceuticals
Isotonic, which means “same pressure,” bears the same chemical resemblance of the body’s blood, plasma and tears. All fluids in the body have a certain concentration, referred to as osmotic pressure. The body’s common osmotic pressure, which is isotonic, allows a consistent maintenance of body tissues. In order for a substance to be absorbed and used in the body’s metabolism, it must be transported in an isotonic state.

Isotonix dietary supplements are delivered in an isotonic solution. This means that the body has less work to do in obtaining maximum absorption. The isotonic state of the suspension allows nutrients to pass directly into the small intestine and be rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream. With Isotonix products, little nutritive value is lost, making the absorption of nutrients highly efficient while delivering maximum results.

And as it gets even better. There is also white willow bark in the supplement. Willow bark comes from the willow tree (Salix species). The bark contains salicin, a compound chemically similar to aspirin. Salicin is metabolized in the body to salicylic acid, which is a precursor to aspirin. The herbal extract became popular as a remedy to relieve pain, inflammation, and fever. More bonuses here!!! 🙂

I highly recommend supporting your liver with things like lemon water, fruit intake to provide the liver with the natural sugars it needs to produce glycogen, lowering your use of toxic chemicals that the liver has to filter, juicing celery, movement and exercise, de-stressing, and using supportive supplements like Bromelain Plus.

As a side note, if you would like more information on assessing your toxic load and the presence of potential heavy metals in your body, as well as determining nutritional deficiencies, here is a link to information on Hair Mineral Analysis that I am pleased to be able to offer my clients, using an accredited lab here in Canada.

Sacred Health Offerings

This morning I was preparing my space before I started my blog writing for the day. I have 3 current blogs so I try to write at least one or two, sometimes three posts in a day. Anyhow, while I was getting ready I thought that I would share a part of what I do for my morning health routine and things I do throughout the entire day to remind myself to add in more of the things that add to my health regime in a positive way.

In the picture above is my morning warm lemon water with honey which is in one of my favorite little glass pots from the thrift store. And behind it is a carafe of water I drink from when I need water . I like to drink it from this stainless steel wine glass (also a thrift store find) because it makes the act or art of drinking it almost sacred to me and is a great visual reminder when I walk by.

I do think of any act that I do for the betterment of my health overall as sacred. My body is my temple and I am learning that the more sacred I make it, the more by body and soul both appreciates and receives it.

This morning, as part of my health routine, I listened to positive youtube videos and this one from Robin Sharma

called “How To 100x Your Productivity In A World Of Distraction” where he talks about our addiction to distraction. It seemed fitting for me today and I also was able to tie it into my thoughts around this blog post.

Where do we get distracted around doing things for our health? Maybe we were going to go for a walk after dinner but we started checking Facebook and then it got too late. Or maybe, we had great intentions of making that new healthy recipe for dinner, but we got distracted with texting someone and ran out of time so we just threw something together healthy or not.

So to bring this in for a landing the point I am trying to make with the water carafes, glasses, and teapot, is that it sets a definite intention for me. It reminds me to focus and to bring about, and to actually implement some healthy actions and to make them ‘sacred’.

My sister told me a story once of where, at her work, when it’s lunch time, she puts on her desk a little teapot that signifies to her that it is indeed time to break for lunch and to en-JOY the time and to en-JOY her lunch break. The teapot is the sacred piece that sets the intention for her to focus on the moment.

I have never forgotten her story and have implemented that philosophy in my own life.

I hope this blog post inspires you to find ways to help add intention and focus to your healthy daily additions. 🙂

Non-Toxic, Your Amazing Life

I Can’t Believe I Didn’t Figure This Out Years Ago!!!

I know some of you will read this and say “Really Maggie?” But maybe there will be other people, like me, who had no idea about this hack.

This morning I was out of papers towels but I wanted to clean my bathroom mirror, so I just grabbed an old terry cloth wash cloth and used it. Wow! I used it with a little window cleaner I had and it was like magic. I was like why have I been using paper towels which A) are not enviro friendly and B) cost money and they are not necessary!

Now I know there are a lot of great cleaning clothes out there now and some made specifically for this purpose and that’s great, but who knew a simple terry cloth (and rougher the better I’m thinking) would do a miraculous job like that.

I then tried using the cloth to clean my cell phone and voila same thing and I didn’t use any cleaner, just the cloth.

I have been using pieces of flannel with my makeup remover for awhile now and this will be a nice addition to my enviro movement in the house.

I have used non-toxic cleaning products many, many years now and I do have a favorite one for windows which also works well for cutting grease, cleaning ovens and more! For windows and mirrors plain old vinegar and water works great but I like the cleaner too especially when it is so versatile, and concentrated so it last a long time and I can use it for multiple things.

Many people ask me what non-toxic products I use and more and more people are making the healthy switch to these types of products and that is fantastic!
I will share the link here for those interested.

The product is called Snap Heavy Duty Concentrate and see below to see all of the things it can be used for.

Snap Heavy-Duty Concentrate’s formula provides a wide variety of uses for the product.

  • Grills, stoves, ovens, pots and pans
  • Removes grease, oil and rust from carpet
  • Steam cleaning carpets
  • Steam cleaning walls and woodwork
  • Windows and screens
  • Bathroom tile, grout and Formica ®
  • Laundry prewash
  • Spot and stain remover
  • Vinyl, leather and tires
  • Wax stripper
  • Glue remover
  • Outdoor plastic furniture
  • Removes grease, oil and grime from driveways, garage floors
  • Use in power washer for awning, siding and decks
  • Engines

Here is the link for more info. You can read all of the great testimonials there too. I love reading reviews and testimonials because they give me ideas for other ways to use the product.

My Magnesium Hack

When you find a hack you love, sometimes you just have to share it!

Most people are deficient in the mineral magnesium. Magnesium is important for so many things. They call magnesium, “the calming mineral”. I feel much calmer since discovering my hack that I share in this post.

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and supports more than 300 enzyme systems. It supports normal energy release, regulation of the body temperature, nerve function, adaptation to stress, metabolism and much more. One of the main mechanisms of magnesium in the body is its support of normal protein synthesis. Normal protein synthesis relies on optimal magnesium concentrations, as magnesium supports the normal delivery to the building blocks of life – our DNA – of signals that triggering the expression of amino acids. In other words, this process supports the body’s normal ability to “make” proteins.

The recommended daily value for adults is 400 mg of magnesium. However, average daily intakes are much less. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that most U.S. adults – especially those over the age of 30 – were receiving, on average, approximately 290 mg of magnesium daily. That study also showed that dietary intake is particularly low among women. Unfortunately, inadequate levels of magnesium have been linked to poorer concentration, memory and cognitive function and muscle discomfort. Sleep quality is associated with higher levels of magnesium and when these levels are low, sleep quality may suffer.

Here are 10 Key Roles of Magnesium in a Nutshell:

1) Magnesium helps to maintain normal muscle function.

2) Magnesium helps to maintain normal nerve function.

3) Magnesium helps to keep heart rhythm steady.

4) Magnesium supports a healthy immune system.

5) Magnesium helps to keep bones strong.

6) Magnesium helps regulate blood sugar levels.

7) Magnesium helps to promote normal blood pressure.

8) Magnesium is involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis.

9) Magnesium serves as a building block for RNA and DNA synthesis.

10) Magnesium is a precursor for neurotransmitters like serotonin.

It is estimated that 80% of the North American population is deficient in Magnesium.

So with that said, I personally have taken a hair mineral analysis to find out that I too, am magnesium deficient even though I take supplementation! There are many factors that can affect mineral absorption and uptake in the body and heavy metals can play a key role in mineral deficiency.

Heavy metals are very toxic and they can interrupt the absorption, metabolism, and use of essential minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, iron, and zinc. This leads to a deficiency of some minerals, which can cause health issues. There are several ways metals and minerals interact with one another that impact your susceptibility to toxic metals and increase your risk of experiencing negative health effects, including serious health issues and deficiencies like magnesium deficiency. For more info on hair mineral analysis which checks for the presence of heavy metals in the body and mineral deficiencies go to www.SuperiorHairAnalysis.com.

So onto my hack. I have found something that I have been using which is an easy way to add in more magnesium. I find that both for myself and my clients, nothing works unless you use it and that is why I love this product, I find I am very good at adding it into my daily routine so it is helping me increase my magnesium levels on a daily basis and it is enjoyable to use!

It is a magnesium lotion with great ingredients like organic coconut oil, shea butter and has no scent! I love it. It is my new go-to hand lotion and I smile everytime I use it because I love it on my hands and I know it has added benefits that have a huge impact on my health.

This lotion contains 185 mg of elemental magnesium per teaspoon so I use it a few times a day to add in the extra magnesium I need. And as an added bonus it even has the added benefit of containing Lactobacillus ferment, a potent probiotic, which I love.

The product description

Formulated for even the most sensitive individuals, Ancient Minerals Magnesium Lotion is designed to deliver magnesium through the skin, direct to the cells.

  • Ideal for children and sensitive individuals
  • Highly therapeutic for psoriasis, eczema, and other skin conditions
  • Significant for massage applications
