Liver Kindness – 5 Ways to Be Kind To Your Liver

Learning to love our livers is truly a life saving practise. The liver, until recently, with the surge of the Fatty Liver epidemic, has been far under appreciated in its role in our heath and in our life force.

In chinese medicine, the liver is associated with anger.  Anger being the “seat of the emotions” resides in the Liver, which is often described as the “Immature Child”. When one denies their feelings especially anger, it causes stagnation…. hence an angry person may have a red face and suffers from headaches. The liver is home to many deep seated emotions and by improving our liver health both physically and emotionally, it can have dramatic positive effects.

I have written a few articles about the liver and its role and function in our bodies and I will include them below. But for today I will share a few things you can do to be kind to your liver.

  1. Forgive Yourself. Let go of any negative self talk and forgive yourself for anything that you feel you need to. If you need to get help to do this, get it! Do whatever you need to do to become your own loving best friend. Nothing eats away at the liver more than self hatred or lack of compassion for oneself. You liver LOVES YOU and is always working for you best and highest good 24/7. It needs you on board. 🙂
  2. Deal with Anger. If you find you are irritable or tend to become angry a lot, you may want to pay extra attention to working at supporting your liver. Anger and irritability can be a BIG clue that you have a liver that is not functioning at an optimal level and don’t feel bad, most people are dealing with compromised livers in this day and age. We have way too much stress, toxic exposure, dealing with heavy metals, poor diet choices, exposure to chemicals in fragrances and products, etc. Clean up your liver (see articles below) and get help to support your emotional health.
  3. Find Peace. It can’t be stressed enough that peace and lowered stress levels are integral to your health when it comes to body, mind and spirit! Find ways in your day to decompress (in a healthy way :-)) and to back off the adrenaline. Adrenaline can act like a poison in the body and creates more toxicity and burden on the liver. Actively work at finding peaceful moments in your day. It is extremely important to do this!
  4. Lemons. Lemons. Lemons. Start your day with warm lemon water with honey and incorporate lemons into your day anytime you can! Lemons and limes are God’s gifts for the liver! Here is a quote from Anthony Williams, Medical Medium who is an advocate of lemon water:
“Lemon water is the perfect way to hydrate, purify, and revitalize your body each morning. Water coming straight from the tap or a bottle has lost its vitality and its innate living structure. By adding fresh squeezed lemon juice, you “wake up” the water and bring it back to life. This allows it to travel more deeply into your tissues & cells and carry the essential nutrients and compounds you need in order to thrive. Lemon water is a good source of vitamins C & B and minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Lemon water is excellent for weight loss, the immune system, alkalinizing the body, controlling high blood pressure, anti-aging, detoxification, purifying the blood, and regulating body temperature. Lemon water is particularly beneficial for the digestive tract and can help relieve constipation, nausea, and even parasites. Lemon water is also good for the cardiovascular and muscular system making it an ideal drink before and after exercise. Consider an early morning ritual of squeezing half a lemon into 16oz of your best quality water upon waking. This deep form of hydration will awaken your mind and energize your body for the day.” ***************** I am sure you can see why I recommend lemons in any way shape or form. 🙂 Squeeze them on salads, in water, and on different foods. They really bring out the flavors in foods. Get creative with them.
  5. Move Your Lymphatic System. Find ways to incorporate movement that helps with lymphatic drainage. Your lymph system, unlike the circulatory system, does not have its own pump, so it needs us to help move it along. The more it is helped, the less the burden on your liver! There are many ways to move lymph but some easy ones are walking, exercise, rebounding, using a whole body vibration machine, massage therapy, dancing and more! Find something that works for you and make sure you do it everyday.

I hope you found this helpful and that you also take advantage and take a peek at the articles below. I wish you all the best.

What To Do With That Celery Juice Pulp!

Attn: Celery Juicers

For all of us on the celery juice train or movement, I am sure we have all experienced this or thought about this, especially in the beginning. What do I do with this pulp I have leftover after juicing my celery?

I can always tell now when people are new to celery juicing because this topic comes up. After awhile most of just get to the point where we toss it. Day after day of juicing kind of makes you detach from the pulp. lol

However, there can be good uses for the pulp so I thought I would share some here. And I will let you know that I got some of these from a thread on a group post. I love how people are so willing to share information and how we can all help each other. And I am sure no one minds me sharing these because these ideas just help everyone so why not 🙂 I am inspired to try some of these and I am going to juice my celery now so I can take a pulp picture for this blog post! lol

So here we go on with some ideas…..

First I will start with a few things I have done. I have put it in a soup that I made with potatoes, onions and carrots, etc. And then turned it into a creamy soup by blending it. Very yummy. Use garlic too and you increase the health benefits. It’s a very soothing soup.

I have also added it into hummus ie. mixed it with blended chickpeas 🙂

Here are some ideas from others:

I’m saving the pulp for veggie broth plus onion skins, a bag of carrot pulp, and other veggies I froze. Gonna boil them up and can into quarts.

I usually juice my celery, then make a separate juice either for myself or my hubby with carrots, apples, cucumber, parsley and put all the pulp together, throw it in a food processor with some garbanzos, salt and pepper, dried herbs and any other seasoning I find fun, I blend it, adding a little bit of juice I just made or water… then lay it out flat on a tray lined with parchment paper, and put in the oven at a low temp to dehydrate and make crackers. They’re actually pretty tasty! You can have the crackers with avocado or hummus or salsa

Sometimes mix it into pet food….or I make muffins out of it …my friends love them .

I use it to make my own celery spice. Just dry it in the oven on the lowest for like 7-10 hours, depending on how much it is and how dry it is. Then I mix it in the blender. Use with everything! 😍

My horse loves it more than any other food

Feed it to my chickens!🐔

I add it to my smoothies.

**** My favorite one: You can dry it and crush it, and use it as salt 🙂

I use it to thicken soups or chili’s

Well there you go folks a few ideas to get us started. Please share with me any ideas your have or ways that you use your pulp. Let’s keep this list of ideas going. I am so glad to see more people following the work of Anthony Williams, Medical Medium. Every day I am witness to lives improving because of this information. 🙂

And if you would like a recipe for the BEST SOUP EVER using celery juice pulp, here you go!https://maggiesvitamins.wordpress.com/2020/10/14/celery-juice-pulp-potato-soup/

Brain Health, Healthy Aging, Your Amazing Life

7 Pillars of Brain Health

There are many factors that affect brain health. How a person manages stress, how well they socialize, how well they sleep, how much they exercise, and what they drink and eat all are crucial to brain health.

So how does one achieve brain health? Here are seven pillars that can help you achieve optimal brain health, even into old age.

  1. Exercise. Exercise can improve both your memory and your blood flow. It also causes chemical changes in the brain that can boost your mood. Exercise is very beneficial for brain health. Exercise can prolong your life, reduce the risk of heart disease, maximize sleep, help you lose weight, and improve your mood. The mind is closely linked to the body so the more exercise you get, the better your mind functions. Try regular exercise to develop a strong memory and improved brain vitality.
  2. Reducing Stress
We cannot always avoid mental stress but there are things we can do to offset stress and to reduce our stress levels in general. High stress levels can also lead to depression and anxiety so it is very important to diminish stress in our lives. Find ways to have more peace in your life. Yoga, meditation, spending time in nature, listening to peaceful and relaxing music, and power napping, are all great ways to help lower stress. Find ways that bring you JOY and do those.
  3. Food and nutrition
There is a lot truth in the old adage “you are what you eat.” By making good food choices every day, you can improve the health of your brain. As we age our brains are affected by many factors and nutrition plays a huge role in brain health. Brains are affected by “oxidation” which results from free radical damage. Foods and supplements that are antioxidants can be very beneficial in reversing the effects of oxidation. Choosing foods that are natural and not processed help to provide the body with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and natural antioxidants. Choose foods that do not come in a package and/or are processed. Learn to question the foods that you put into your body. For example, ask yourself: Is this food helping my body and brain or is it a detriment?
  4. Lower Your Risk Factors
Things like smoking, high cholesterol, head trauma, depression, obesity, and diabetes all increase a person’s chances of developing dementia. The good news is that we have a lot of control over many of these risks factors. Again question your habits and ask yourself is the habit or behavior you are participating in beneficial to your health and longevity or is it having a negative impact?
  5. Sleep and relaxation
Your brain functions better when you are well rested. Sleep is energizing, improves your immune system, enhances your mood, and restarts the brain. It may also decrease the development of beta-amyloid plaque, which is linked to Alzheimer’s dementia. Anyone who has had to stay awake for an extended period of time, or has gotten a bad night’s sleep knows how much of an impact this has on mental functioning, focus and concentration. If you have trouble with sleeping well, try meditation to manage your stress levels, which may also help to decrease the age-related decline of brain health. There are few things that help a person feel better than getting enough sleep. It sharpens the brain and helps maximize the brain.
  6. Mental fitness
Brain health depends on using your mind to its maximum ability. Those who spend much of the their time in front of a television are not really stimulating the brain and exercising it in a way that promotes its growth and power, something that is similar to muscle atrophy from lack of movement. Getting enough mental exercise is just as critical as physical exercise is to brain health. Mental exercise can maximize a person’s ability promote brain cell growth and improve the functioning of their brain. It can decrease the chances of developing Alzheimer’s dementia as well. Just as a person exercises their muscles, they need to exercise their brain. People who persist in developing new interests and skills, engage in things that are interesting, partake in new activities, and continue to learn new things, will maximize their brain functioning.
  7. Social Interaction. People who maintain social interaction and remain connected with others have better brain health. Try to engage in conversation with others, spend time with others, and stay in touch with loved ones. Those people who have the most social interaction enjoy better brain health. The wonderful benefit of technology in today’s modern world allows easier connection with others right from your own home. There are many Facebook groups, for example, and you can find people with a kindred mindset for gardening, cooking, art, health topics, etc. There are so many to choose from.

Bromelain, inflammation, Osteoarthritis

Bromelain

We hear a lot about the amazing benefits of Bromelain lately, and for good reason!  Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme which is an enzyme that breaks down protein. It is found naturally in the stems of pineapples.

Inside our bodies, many unhealthy cells “disguise”themselves from the immune system using a protective protein shield.

Proteolytic enzymes like bromelain can blast this protective layer, promoting the removal of cellular debris and allowing the immune system to do its job.

Bromelain also contains chemicals that interfere with the growth of tumor cells and other unhealthy cells, thereby helping the body HEAL normally.

tumour cell

A noteworthy fact is that  Glioma tumor cells studied displayed reduced adhesive, migratory and invasive properties following bromelain treatment. Glioma is a type of tumor that occurs in the brain and spinal cord.  Results showed a 43% difference in tumor migration in brain tissue between bromelain-treated group compared to the control group.

Source: Berit B Tysnes, H Rainer Maurer, Torsten Porwol, Beatrice Probst, Rolf Bjerkvig, and Frank Hoover.
Bromelain Reversibly Inhibits Invasive Properties of Glioma Cells. Neoplasia. 2001 November; 3(6): 469–479.

A super interesting fact is that when it comes to osteoarthritis, treatment with bromelain (540 mg/day over a three-week period) reduced osteoarthritis symptoms by up to 80 percent!

Source: Klein G, Kullich W. Short-term treatment of painful osteoarthritis of the knee with oral enzymes: a randomised, double-blind study versus Diclofenac. Clin Drug Invest. 2000;19:15–23

Another great benefit of Bromelain is  that it helps the body to produce enzymes that PROTECT against illness.   In fact, bromelain has been studied for its ability to enhance the effect of the antibiotics. In a study of people with urinary tract infections, 100%
of participants given antibiotics in combination with bromelain were cured of their infection,
compared to just 46% who received antibiotics alone.

Source: Mori S, Ojima Y, Hirose T, Sasaki T, Hashimoto Y. The clinical effect of proteolytic enzyme containing bromelain and trypsin on urinary tract infection evaluated by double blind method. Acta Obstet Gynaecol Jpn.
1972;19(3):147-153.

In a nutshell some of the amazing benefits of Bromelain are:

  • Supports the body’s normal healing process
  • Promotes optimal cell health
  • Supports the body’s normal inflammatory response
  • Supports the body’s normal tissue and recovery repair process
  • Supports a healthy immune system
  • Supports healthy joint function
  • Promotes healthy blood circulation
  • May help support normal blood viscosity and blood platelet aggregation

Eating more pineapple is a great way to get more Bromelain but I highly recommend a quality supplement that is delivered in a therapeutic and bioavailable way.  This is my preferred supplement of choice that I use with my clients.  This link provides a lot of useful information as well as FAQ and the science behind Bromelain. anxiety, Stress, Your Amazing Life

Stress Less

Just about everybody has stress these days and chronic stress is an epidemic! Studies have shown that chronic stress is associated with a variety of health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, anxiety, and even brain aging concerns.

stress less

Stress is also closely associated with hormone imbalance and weight gain.

Whether stress comes from outside sources or internal banter, all stressors place stress on the body and mind and is something that should be a top priority when it comes to wellness management.

A few ways to help with stress are:

  1. Spend time in nature. Nature is a great way to de-stress naturally. Let the earth soak up some of your stressful vibes and clear the way for more peace of mind and stillness.
  2. Breathe. Just breathe. Take time to slow down your breathing and connect with your breath. Just the act of doing this, helps to interrupt stress patterns.
  3. Listen to calming music. Gentle piano music is a great example of a calming type of music that can help to shift your stressful sensations to more a more peaceful flow or feeling within the body and mind. For example click here:
  4. Take time to be still throughout the day. Just stop for a moment. Even if this means you have a potty break at your workplace and take a minute or two, to consciously sit there and connect with your breathe. Many of us are creatures of go-go-go and we forget to just ‘stop’ now and then.
  5.  Make your desires a priority. One of the ways we experience stress is by not living in a way that matches our life’s purpose or passions. Make sure you both acknowledge and honor the desires of your soul. The more you do this, the more you will find peace and the more your life will flow with balance and grace.

There are many more ways to work on balancing the stress in your life, but these are just a few that I hope you find helpful.

Cooking, lemons, Your Amazing Life

A Little Inspiration

I must say I personally have been inspired by the new Canada Food Guide to work more at cooking from scratch. I have written a blog post recently about the new Canada Food Guide and if you like, you can read it here: Link to Previous Canada Food Guide Blog Post about En-JOY-ing our Food

Today I picked up these adorable measuring nesting bowls with lemons on them. Lately I am in love with lemons, especially starting my day with warm lemon water. I find now that I am creating more food and new recipes of my own, I can never have enough measuring cups, especially when it comes to preparing my mise en place.

Mise en place (French pronunciation: [mi zɑ̃ ˈplas]) is a French culinary term which means “putting in place” or “everything in its place.” It refers to the set up required before cooking, and is often used in professional kitchens to refer to organizing and arranging the ingredients ex. chopped veggies, sauces, cuts of meat, spices, herbs etc. Basically it’s getting your ingredients and utensils ready before you cook.

I first learned of mise en place last year while taking my Forks Over Knives plant based cooking school, of which, I am a proud graduate.

I am finding that I am getting more JOY from preparing my food and having things like these bowls that make me smile while I am doing it. 🙂

I also love how these bowls ‘nest’ making for easy storage.

Burnout, Happiness, Inspiration, Your Amazing Life

Avoiding Burnout & Living with Vitality

Burnout can take on many forms and affect us emotionally, mentally, and physically as well as spiritually. Sometimes it feels like our soul is zapped and we have nothing left to give.

What are some ways that we can avoid these feelings of burnout and lack of vitality?

On a physical level, one might want to look at adrenal burnout. Some symptoms of adrenal burnout are aches and pains, sweet cravings, exhaustion, low blood sugar, trouble getting to sleep and waking up, a reliance on stimulants,  a pain in the neck and more.  There are lots of great articles and info on supporting the adrenals and I will be sharing some here at this blog as well, but today I want to talk more about the spiritual side of burnout…..

Inspiration or  ‘in spirit’ is a force all on its own and when we feel overwhelmed, over burdened or afraid, our inspiration hides itself from us. We become disconnected from our own inspiration and life force.

How do we connect to this inspirational life force?  There are many ways but today I will cover a few key ones.

  1. You must honor your wants and desires. YOU are important in YOUR life and you need to accept this. Please don’t live your life for others only. It’s great to appreciate  the people in your life, like your kids and your significant other etc., but please don’t lose yourself. YOUR life is a gift and you need to open your gift and share your gifts with the world. Your kids are here to experience and en-JOY their journey and you are here to en-JOY yours too! One of the best things you can do is to lead by example and pave the wave for your kids and those in your life to appreciate their lives, by appreciating yours and honoring your desires and wants!
  2. Let go of the things than don’t serve you, including the past.  As a Life Coach the biggest pain body I see in people, that is affecting their health today, is hanging on to pain from the past. There are many ways to let this go, life coaching, counselling and pyshcotherapy for example, but I would offer to you it really does not have to be as hard as we think and the sooner you release it, the faster  your inspiration and vitality will improve. Do whatever you need to do to let go of yesterday.
  3.  Support your body, mind and soul by adding in more… more nutrients, more calm, more meditation, more nature, more LOVE, more JOY, more HAPPY.  The biggest key here is to ALLOW yourself to have these things. Most people, because of running old programs, love to sabotage themselves  and ‘punish’ themselves because they don’t feel worthy. Recognize what it is you are doing and change it 🙂

I am going to wrap up for today and let these three ideas or concepts sit with you. I hope you find them helpful and remember you need to adapt and do what works for YOU. It is my only wish that you do for YOU that which brings you JOY and helps you to have more vitality  and inspiration in your life.

Heart Health, Hydration, Your Amazing Life

Tips for a Healthy & Happy Heart

February is heart health month so I thought I’d share a few ideas for supporting a healthy and happy heart.

The heart is a muscle and like all muscles, the more we use and work it, the bigger it gets. So with that being said, one of the number one ways to increase your heart’s capacity for love is to use it to love! The more love you can put out, the more you will get back.  First and foremost, we need to love ourselves. I write about this often and over and over again and I will never stop until everyone in the world has their own love cup spilling over and oozing out onto the entire planet and through the entire cosmos! 🙂

Loving allows for heart expansion and for streams of gratitude and grace.  Practicing gratitude is the fastest way to opening your heart to more self-love and appreciation, and in turn you will have the capacity to love others and to love your life. As the saying goes, it all starts at home, so to speak. 🙂

On the physical side of things, here are a few supportive ideas to keep your heart healthy:

  1. Limit your fat intake, especially saturated fats that come in the form of fried foods, and unhealthy oils. Actually it’s good to limit your fats all around and focus more on plant based foods that are chock full of micro-nutrients, fiber, enzymes and phyto-nutrients. Make these types of foods the focal point of your diet. man veg rs.jpg
  2. Stay hydrated.  Thick and sluggish blood that lacks oxygen and good mitochondrial production, is not the place you want to be when it comes to heart health! I have written about that here: Are You Suffering from Toxic & Thick Blood?
  3. Movement. Exercise and movement are crucial for heart health. A sedentary lifestyle is one of the greatest risk factors for heart disease. Aerobic exercise and any type of exercise can be beneficial for strengthening your heart and cardiovascular system, improving your circulation and helping your body to use oxygen better, increasing energy levels so you can do more activities without becoming tired or short of breath, as well as a host of other benefits such as improved joint health.  Any way you look at it, movement is beneficial when it comes to health period! Movement also helps to move the lymphatic system, which in turn helps to detoxify the body, which in turn helps to lessen the load on the circulatory system. Exercise and movement can also improve sleep and sleep heals the body and restores the body’s vitality.
  4. Alternative Movement.  If for any reason, one cannot move easily there are alternatives.  Chair yoga is something that might be of benefit and one can do at home. You can find free chair yoga that you can do at home on YouTube.  Another great alternative is to use a Whole Body Vibe Machine.  These machines provide a one hour workout in 10 minutes and can be adapted if a person needs to sit. You can read about the benefits here: Link to Benefits of a Whole Body Vibe Session
  5. Peace of Mind. As mentioned earlier, work at loving yourself more and make time for practicing peace of mind and stillness.  Yoga, sitting in nature, meditation and listening to calming music are but a few ways to foster calm within the body and mind. Get creative and listen to your heart on ways that will work for you….
  6. Listen to your heart!!!! One of the best medicines for heart health, is honoring your wants, desires and needs. Get clear on what is important to you in life. What brings you JOY? Do more of it! Own YOUR life. Make your life a priority.  Life goes by in the blink of an eye, make sure you make the moments count and make moments that matter!
  7. Supplement. Supplements are enhancements and can truly be catalysts when it comes to improving heart health. There are countless nutrients and supplements that can be supportive in heart health but a few major ones are:                                                  Co-Enzyme Q-10, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin B-12, Zinc, Selenium, Magnesium, OPC’s and other anti-oxidants, Curcumin, Omega III’s. Astaxanthin, and more. Feel free to reach out to me to discuss supplement choices in detail. I am also available to offer suggestions based on individual situations and with your particular health goals in mind.

Vitamin ‘S’ The Most Important Vitamin of All Time!!!!!!

Vitamin S is the most important vitamin and nutrient for the body, mind and soul, and yet many people do not get enough of it.

I thought with February being heart month, this would be a good time to discuss this important nutrient.

snp hearts

In my years of coaching I have found that so many people suffer from a deficiency of this vitamin.

What is this key nutrient?

It is Self-Love! Self-Love is the most important nutrient for us and it is the one we struggle with the most.

Since February is all about the heart, why don’t we all commit to being our own Valentine? To working at loving ourselves more and judging less?

Just think we could save so much precious time and energy doing things we en-JOY and feeling good instead of wasting our precious time by using it up in self criticism and judgement. You all know what I am talking about here. 🙂

I have  written before on self-love so to keep this simple, here is the link:
