Sore Tummy – 6 Ways to Help Your Child with Anxiety

As a parent, how often have you heard the words “I have a sore tummy” or “My tummy’s sore”? I’m sure most parents have heard these words but some more than others.

I have taught my own daughter, who gets a sore stomach, to tap into and listen to the clues that her body offers. Sivanna is 12 and she has been listening to her tummy talk for several years now. She is learning what foods make her feel a certain way and she also knows that when she is experiencing anxiety it shows up in her gut.

There are many forms of anxiety that children feel. Some of which, but are not limited to, separation anxiety, fear, dread, uncertainty, worry, feelings of inadequacy, and the list goes on.

The stomach is often called the second brain, is referred to as ‘gut instinct’, and is home to the enteric nervous system, and is also linked to the solar plexus chakra.

The solar plexus or third chakra is a control center for will, personal power, personal responsibility, mental capabilities, the intellect, forming personal beliefs, decision making, self-confidence, independence, personal identity and personality, so it seems very fitting that as children grow and evolve, the tummy is a barometer for anxiety and angst.

How can we help our young children with anxiety?

  1.  First and foremost we can help by discussing and creating conversations around what they are feeling in their body and what it means to them. Sivanna and I mutually came to the conclusion that some of her tummy strains, were anxiety and we openly discussed it. Now, when she feels this particular type of angst, we peel back the onion layer, so to speak, to see what is underlying there.
  2. Listening to your child. This is something I have to work on myself. I know I never truly listen enough. Let’s face it, we all want to be heard and listened to. While the conversation may not seem important to us, it is extremely important to them. Try listening with an open heart and a non-judgmental mind to make room for clearer communication and your child’s willingness to share.
  3. Let you child know that they are ‘safe’. Let them know that they can openly discuss anything with you at anytime. Let them know that there is NO-thing that they cannot share with you. They need to feel safe and that  they will be worthy of your love and support NO MATTER WHAT!!!! This is indeed what unconditional love means. We all need to feel safe, heard, and supported.
  4. Ask your child for their input on what they are feeling, what they think might be underlying in this particular way of feeling, and really probe them for input. Children love to be heard, love to share, and love to feel that they are worthy of providing input.  It is also a good idea to ask them for possible solutions to help relieve the angst or anxiety. Ask them what ideas do they have to alleviate this feeling they are having?
  5. Sleep! Make sure your child gets enough sleep! We all know what it feels like to be tired and worn out. It’s hard to cope with life. Make sure you support your children in a routine that provides adequate sleep, rest and downtime.
  6. Proper nutrition and nutritional deficiencies play a BIG role in children’s anxiety. Children don’t always eat optimally for many different reasons and they may suffer from common digestive and assimilation issues, just like adults, so making sure your child gets the proper micro-nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, enzymes etc. is hugely important to help with both anxiety and overall health.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 I really believe the more we openly discuss the issue of anxiety and teach our children to tap into what their body and mind is saying to them, the more we can help them. Let’s start the conversation…..

Canada’s Food Guide Says to En-JOY our Food! Yipee!

The new Canada Food Guide was just recently updated and released. It has a lot of great things in it.

Toward the bottom of this post I will share their eating recommendations with links right to the official Government of Canada site, but what I am really en-JOY-ing are these recommendations:

be mindful snp

I love that they are encouraging us to be mindful and present and aware of our food, what we put into our bodies, and to really connect with that. 🙂

cook more often snp

This is also so encouraging. I know that we are all busy but cooking and preparing our food should be of the utmost priority if we want to have a healthy and balanced life. And it can be so much fun. I myself, finally started using my Instant Pot and am eager to dig in and try new things. In fact, I am doing so, while I am writing this blog post…. I take a little break and prep a few ingredients. In this case I am chopping some veggies for a tomato sauce I am going to make.

I have written articles in the past about getting our kids involved and making it fun. In my community they now have programs where they are teaching kids to cook from scratch and I love that.

Happy family in the kitchen cooking dinner together

Let’s commit to doing this in the home more too. It’s a great way to get the kids off of screen and available to share conversation with you so you can find out how they are feeling and what is going on in their life, at the same time as teaching valuable skills.  And if you feel you are lacking in your cooking skills, why not watch a Youtube video or cooking show together with the kids or other family members or friends, and try out a recipe with guidance.  The Canada Food Guide website has great recipes also.  You can sign up here to get recipes too! Sign up for Recipes from Canada Food Guide

eat meals with others snp

Well we’ve talked about cooking together, but even more fun is eating together. Try to make time to have sit down meals with your family, even if it’s just a night or two a week, if your schedule is hectic.  And better yet, why not make it special too. At our house we put out placemats and often I like to use a pretty plate or special serving dish to enhance the whole experience. The more sacred and special we make mealtimes, the more beneficial they are to our health all around.

If you live alone, why not reach out and suggest to another person, who is in your same shoes, to get together and cook a meal or to prep a few meals for your upcoming week? This can be a great way to offset loneliness and foster a sense of community and being connected. Food has been a catalyst, since the beginning of time, to connect people. It is a common thread that is woven into everyday of our lives.

I hope you en-JOY-ed today’s thoughts on the new Canada Food Guide. And please feel share this blog post so that we can inspire others to eat healthier and cook more often and together. 🙂 And as promised here are the links for more detailed information about the new Canada food guide here:

Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, whole grain foods and protein foods. Choose protein foods that come from plants more often.

Limit highly processed foods. If you choose these foods, eat them less often and in small amounts.

Make water your drink of choice

Use food labels

Be aware that food marketing can influence your choices

My Client’s Success with Celery Juice!!!

Celery Juice is the latest health hack and for good reason. People everywhere are drinking their daily 16 oz of celery juice and seeing tremendous benefits especially with digestion.

One of my clients started on the celery juice some time back and has had great results with acid reflux! She messaged me yesterday and it made me very happy!  I will share her message below and her NP is her Nurse Practitioner by the way…

Client: “Omg !!! I totally forgot to tell you about my NP visit !! I know you’ll be excited by it too. I don’t have to take my acid reflux medication daily any more. I told her how I was about to go a few days at a time now. She said ok. Now don’t take it until you have a heart burn attack. Then only take it til the heart burn is gone. Then stop until you have another attack again.”

I am very happy for my client. She was a little apprehensive about trying the celery juice at first, but now she is addicted! 🙂 We often keep each other posted about which grocery stores in town have the best celery in stock, with the best price, etc.

Medical Medium’s 12 Reasons to Drink Celery Juice

I saw this great 12 Reason guide today for why to drink celery juice and thought it is a must share!

This comes right from Anthony Williams, The Medical Medium:

12 Reasons To Drink Celery Juice
12reasonstodrinkcj
1. Lowers Inflammation
Celery juice starves the unproductive bacteria and viruses that are behind inflammation.

2. Supports Weight Loss
Celery juice helps to clean up and detoxify the liver and a sluggish, toxic liver is behind mystery weight gain.

3. Aids Digestion
Celery juice restores hydrochloric acid levels in the stomach for better long-term digestion.

4. Reduces Bloating
Celery juice prompts the liver to increase bile production and strengthens the stomach’s hydrochloric acid production. Old undigested, rotting protein and rancid fats trapped at the bottom of the stomach and in the small intestinal tract can then be broken down, helping bloating.

5. Helps Eczema & Psoriasis
The undiscovered cluster salts in celery juice break down the cell membranes of the pathogens responsible for eczema, eventually killing and destroying them.

6. Fights Infections
Celery juice enhances your entire body’s immune system. White blood cells absorb the sodium cluster salts in celery juice through their cell structure and then use them as an offense mechanism, not just a defense mechanism.

7. Helps Prevent UTI’s
Celery juice is an antiseptic to streptococcus bacteria, which is the true unknown cause of Urinary Tract Infections.

8. Healing For Acne
Celery juice’s undiscovered sodium cluster salts are toxic to bacteria, including streptococcus in the liver and lymphatic system, which is the real cause of acne.

9. Prevents High Blood Pressure
Celery juice helps stabilize blood pressure by cleansing the liver of Liver Troublemakers (see Liver Rescue for info), which leads to healthier blood that can be easily pumped by the heart,

10. Helps Lower High Cholesterol
Celery juice helps cleanse and strengthen the liver, and breaks up undigested rotting proteins and fats that contribute to a sluggish liver, which is behind high cholesterol.

11. Helps Prevent Ulcers
Celery juice helps destroy the bacteria responsible for ulcers.

12. Protects Liver Health
Your liver’s individual immune system relies on the undiscovered types of sodium cluster salts inside of celery.

For more information on celery juice and how it can help you heal, refer to Anthony’s book “Liver Rescue”.

Top Health Trend for 2019 Might Surprise You!

I was reading an article someone sent to me about the latest wellness trends and what would be popular in 2019. Of course celery juice was #1 on the list. You can learn more about celery juice at my blog post from last year here: Link to Celery Juice 101 Blog Post

But today I want to talk about another trend that I think is awesome! The trend is that people are going to realize that a healthier lifestyle means more than what they eat, how intense their workouts are, etc.

More and more people are coming to realize that the little things we do on a daily basis have a huge impact on our health and peace of mind. These are usually parts of our lives that we take for granted, like spending time with those we love, taking down time, taking a break from technology, reading a book, cooking a meal, playing a board game together, going for a walk, and basically getting back to living and en-JOYing life!

I really love this trend and am inspired to add in more of this life en-JOYment for myself and I hope you too find that 2019 brings you more of the things that make you smile and that connect your with those you love!

Maggie Holbik.com is a Certified Life Coach and Nutritionist who is excited about 2019 and beyond. There is so much JOY to be had from the simple things in life, that they do in fact become the big things!
