Mindfulness & Chocolate :-)

Mindfulness is a state of being that allows one to both connect with and be present with self and the environment around them. It is a way of being centered or grounded and connected.

Think of mindfulness as a moment by moment connection to thoughts, feelings, perceptions, senses, and outside stimuli. This concept may sound stimulating but it is actually the opposite. Mindfulness allows us to detach from judgement or conditional thinking. It is more like becoming an observer; an observer of self and the things and experiences around us.

Mindfulness can be experienced in many ways. One way is through meditation. Meditation allows the stream of consciousness to flow and float on by as the observer (You), silently watches or listens. This is a fine example of mindfulness.

Another easy way to practice mindfulness is when walking. Purposely experience and be aware of each step you take. A great place to practice this is in a park or in the wilderness. Observe yourself planting your foot down each time you take a step. Feel the earth beneath you, listen to the sound the step makes, feel your foot connect to the earth, observe how the ground feels beneath your foot, and observe the overall experience.

One of my favorite mindfulness exercises is with food. Take a piece of chocolate for example. Everybody loves chocolate. Take a bite of chocolate and truly experience it. Feel the texture of the chocolate as it melts in your mouth, delight in the taste, savour the flavour, and connect with the experience one bite at a time. chocolate lips

Mindful eating is a very healthy addition to one’s lifestyle as it let’s the body appreciate and be thankful for the food, especially when it involves nutritious and life enhancing foods full like fruits and vegetables. When one connects to the energy of ‘live foods’ they provide even more life-giving energy and their benefits are increased.

One way that I use mindfulness is by reminding myself to slow down, watch my steps, and to not rush when I am going somewhere, especially in increment weather. One wrong move can have long term complications, so I remind myself often to move mindfully.

There are countless ways to practice mindfulness, but I will leave you with the most important thought, which is to have fun with it and end-JOY the practice of mindfulness.

Digestive Health, heartburn, liver health

Help with Heartburn

If you have ever had heartburn, you know it is NOT fun!  Heartburn is a burning pain in your chest, just behind your breastbone. The pain is often worse after eating, in the evening, or when lying down or bending over.

If you experience regular heartburn I would encourage you to look at what might be causing it.

Anthony Williams, The Medical Medium says “Acid reflux, while it is in fact related to acids, is not due to gastric acids or hydrochloric acid from the stomach. If you or someone you know is experiencing acid reflux regularly, the acid is either coming from a bacteria or toxins in the liver and even the small intestinal tract, though the most common cause is bacterial. Medical communities have no idea that this is what is really behind this unpleasant condition. There are cases of acid reflux where there is an actual kink in the intestines or a hernia. However, if the cause is not a visible one, it is directly related to a weakened liver and bacterial growth. This bacteria produces an acid that mimics gastric acid and fools the physician into thinking that is what it is, when in fact it is not a stomach gland-produced acid at all.

When you have bacteria and toxin-based acid coming up and causing acid reflux or heartburn, it means you actually have a lack of hydrochloric acid in your stomach. Hydrochloric acid is the good kind of acid that actually destroys bacteria, which in turn prevents acid reflux. In other words, if you have the bad acids, it means you do not have enough of the good acids.

Acid reflux is also connected to a weakened liver. Typically weak digestion is due to an overburdened liver that cannot produce strong enough bile, which then forces the stomach to overproduce hydrochloric acid to compensate. This is extremely taxing on both of the organs and can then result in acid reflux.”

Many people take antacids or proton pump inhibitors, but there are side effects to using them and they can also interfere with vitamin and mineral absorption in the body, so it is better to look for a natural product that supports the situation more holistically. When it comes to proton pump inhibitors, they not only block the release of stomach acid but also something else called “intrinsic factor,” making it impossible to absorb vitamin B12 as an example. When it comes to calcium uptake and absorption it’s important for calcium to be absorbed with the presence of acid. 2

What to use instead? Here is a suggestion for a product that may be beneficial. An added bonus is that this formula contains Turmeric which has anti-inflammatory and superb antioxidant capabilities, and other great ingredients like marshmallow root, artichoke and slippery elm. This link is specifically for Canadians but if you are in the USA and would like a suggestion, please let me know by shooting me a message in the contact form below.

Depression & Anxiety, Drugs

I Was So Saddened today!

meds

Today I went to the Shoppers Drug Mart website to look for something and I saw this picture. I was astounded at this number! Two Hundred and Forty Three tons of medication that was brought back, as in unused, expired or discarded for whatever reason. Why I was so shocked is that this is just the number that was brought back! Imagine then how much is consumed by people?

I am not against medication by any means, it has a purpose and a place and is an important part of health and wellness care, but I was instantly jolted into how big this industry really is and saddened that there are so many people on all of these medications. Something is wrong with this picture. I am sure you would agree, that life should not be this way!

I googled  and 243 tonnes is 486,000 pounds of meds! OMG! And this is just in Canada I am assuming.

I will continue to do my part to help people learn natural ways to add more nutrition, more JOY, more nature, more laughter, and more healthy additions into their lives so they can improve their health and peace of mind in a way more so the way nature intended it to be.

The link mentioned above also stated that 375,000 Canadian teens have abused
prescription drugs and 55% got them from a home!   If we can get people healthier with less emphasis on prescription drugs, can you see the impact it would have on our children also?

Let’s all do our part by continuing to work on improving our personal health and leading the way for our children and the future children of the world.

Maggie Holbik.com is a Board Certified Nutritionist and Life Coach who believes in the power of nature and in laughter as medicine.  She encourages her clients to make small and manageable life changes to enhance their physical health, emotional health and spiritual well-being.

Hair Analysis Review

I wanted to share this feedback I got from my friend Helen. Helen recently had a hair mineral analysis test done through me and the accredited lab that I use for this.

This is what Helen had to say:

Dear Maggie,

I am compelled to write you this note of gratitude for suggesting and walking me through the hair analysis. It has helped me tremendously in weeding through what I need to do moving forward, to assist my health. As we all know there are so many companies out there promising health, but what do I really need? I have seen through hair analysis that I need specific minerals, and my liver needs help. I am starting my journey in the right direction.  Thank you so much again.

Sincerely,

Helen Liba

For those that don’t know Helen Liba, Helen is a Certified Raw Foods Chef and a wealth of knowledge when it comes to healing foods and nutrition, so I did not take this review lightly. 🙂 I was very honoured that I could help Helen take her health to the next level by uncovering some clues to help enhance her daily protocols for better health and wellness.

Glorious and Grand – Ginger!

ginger-1714196_1920 (1)

Ginger is used in numerous forms, including fresh, dried, pickled, preserved, crystallized, candied, and powdered or ground. The flavor is somewhat peppery and slightly sweet, with a strong and spicy aroma. I have found that people either love it or hate it, but with that said, if we realize how amazing it is for us, it would be wise to learn to love it yes?. 🙂

Ginger has been purported to exert a variety of powerful therapeutic and preventive effects and has been used for thousands of years for the treatment of hundreds of ailments from colds to cancer.

It is known to greatly aid in digestion and assimilation and is widely regarded to help prevent colds, flu, motion sickness, and vertigo. Ginger can also help to alleviate menstrual cramps, nausea, heartburn, migraines, sore throats, exhaustion, fatigue, and constipation and it is great in providing relief from the stomach flu and food poisoning according to Anthony Williams, The Medical Medium.

Anthony also states that ginger also contains potent anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols and is a powerful painkiller which makes it especially beneficial for those who suffer with joint, muscle, and nerve pain. Ginger has incredible immune-boosting and germ fighting abilities and has even been shown to help provide protection and relief from E.coli, Staph infections, and Candida albicans.

In ancient times, ginger was highly regarded as a spiritual cleanser and used before and during holy days as a way to awaken and purify the body, mind, and spirit. Fresh ginger is one of the most potent ways to receive its health benefits. Try making a liter of ginger water or tea everyday by adding freshly grated ginger in water and let steep for 10-20 minutes. Adding some raw honey and fresh squeezed lemon juice will enhance its flavor and add to its protective and healing properties.

Fresh ginger is also excellent juiced with apples and celery for an energizing and immune boosting drink. Using fresh ginger in any of your cooking or preparing of food will also provide healing benefits and should be added whenever possible. If you find fresh ginger too strong for your liking, then try using ginger in powder, capsule, tea, or tincture form that can be found online or in your local health food store.

I personally am looking for more ways to add this feisty plant, from a plant family that includes cardamom and turmeric, into my daily diet. Today, for example, I threw in some chopped fresh ginger root, fresh chopped turmeric, chopped apples, cinnamon, maple syrup and honey into a slow cooker with water. It’s gently brewing right now and I can’t wait to try it. I will strain it and drink it like a warm and soothing tea with benefits. 🙂 So many good ingredients in there! My body and soul are going to love it!

Shine from Within!

shining grape red.jpg

Yesterday I bought these organic grapes and by the looks of them, they need to be eaten soon. I love all the stages of ripeness to fruit, each one offering their different delights and benefits.

What really made me smile about these grapes, is the shining one. I thought it was so awesome and a great example of something we can apply to our own unique selves. This grape was lit up by the sun and I am so in love with the sun lately. The more I connect with that thought, the more I know at a deep level, how healing the sun is for us and how it can infuse healing properties into plants!

We too can be lit up and let our lights shine! We can too be our unique selves, in different stages of life and life’s challenges and glories. No matter where we are at it life, we have the opportunity to rise again and let our internal lights shine. Can you see how beautiful that shining grape is? That is you in all your glory, shining from within.

How do we do this? We do it through self-acceptance, self-forgiveness, self-love, intention, and by believing that we are truly capable of letting that inner light out for the world to see. If you need to forgive yourself for something, do it! If you need to treat yourself more kind, do it! Do whatever you need to do to transition to this ‘lighter’ place.

Today I encourage you to let the world see your light, even if it is one shining beam at a time until you can light up your entire being. Keep the vision of this grape in your mind and know that by allowing your inner light to shine, you too can light up your soul and shine on, allowing the entire world to see your divine essence and beauty!

Maggie Holbik.com is a Certified Life Coach and Board Certified Nutritionist who likes to let her light shine, but understands that true light can only come from the dark, so she believes all experiences offer the chance for inner growth and the opportunity to rise again in light and love. Compassion, Kindness and Forgiveness, are three Blessings we can offer ourselves and the world.
